Alien Caterpillar Painting Techniques

In this lesson from September, we followed a tutorial on painting in Photoshop using the lineart and colour palette provided.

Here is the tutorial:

Here is my painted version:

This tutorial was useful because I learnt how to clean up a messy lineart quickly. I used to struggle with painting an image after adding shadows in grey because I find that sometimes it can make everything look muddy. However this time I tried to mimic the final image in the tutorial and realised that by picking more vibrant colours and painting over the image, I could come up with something that looks more appealing.

Speed Painting

In this lesson, we had our first go at speed painting by doing a study of a robot painting that was handed out to us in class.

This is what I ended up with before the class finished.

I am used to drawing as opposed to blocking out shapes, so I took a long time adjusting and at this point, I definitely need more practice. I have not had much experience with Adobe Photoshop before, so my brush use here is terrible. I also struggle with values so I had a really hard time picking them out from looking at the printed out version. Still, I had fun doing it and I can't wait to try out some more speed studies.

Robot

Our first assignment was to design a "badass" robot character and was a lot of fun.

I knew I wanted a robot that could also be used as a weapon, so I set about exploring some ideas. At first, I wanted a childlike face because I felt it contrasted a lot with the robot having a huge, lethal weapon. I then moved on to making the body very small and childlike as well to continue this idea.

This was my final design with colours. The robot has interchangeable arms for different situations and acts as a battle bot in the future. I imagine that the colours would be from some future country's flag.
